The dark streaks running down so many East Texas roofs are usually Gloeocapsa magma, a type of algae. On asphalt shingles it feeds on the limestone filler; on metal panels and tile it takes hold anywhere shade and damp let it. Left alone, it holds moisture, speeds up wear and makes a good roof look old.
Pressure washing a roof can knock granules off shingles, strip the finish from painted metal, crack or dislodge tile and drive water past panels and flashing. Manufacturers recommend a low-pressure chemical cleaning instead. Our soft wash kills the algae and lichen, and the streaks keep fading as the weather rinses them away.
